Dean Stanley Canada passed away Friday after a period of failing health following his 2005 lung transplant. He was 66 years old.
Dean was born to John Morrow and Florence Atkins Canada in Lexington, Nebraska on June 26, 1942. They took him home to Elwood and his brother Stuart. He was educated in Bertrand, Nebraska, Denver and Lakewood, Colorado, graduating from Lakewood High School in 1960. Dean enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard after graduation, and served in California and Virginia. He was honorably discharged from the USCG Reserves in 1968.
In 1965, Dean earned a BFA from Ohio University with a major in Photography and a minor in English.
Dean moved to Vail in 1969 and bunked at the Vail Fire Station where he served as a volunteer fire fighter. He worked for Joe Langmaid and Blanche Hauserman at Vail Ski Rentals. The shop was managed by Garrett Smith who became his life-long friend.
Dean joined his brother Stuart in real estate at Canadas of Vail and ended his sales career as a broker/owner of the Coldwell Banker office. In retirement, Dean enjoyed volunteering for the Eagle County Humane Society, The Literacy Project, and he taught GED classes in Avon and in Denver. He took Active Minds courses offered through the University of Denver. He enjoyed traveling, photography, reading, and the company of his many friends and acquaintances.

He married Charlyn Mary Costello in 1979. She survives him along with the pride of his life, daughter Collins Mary Canada, and ten nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at the Vail Interfaith Chapel on Wednesday, August 13th at 11:00 am. A luncheon reception will be held at Vail Mountain School at 12:30 pm.
