Dennis Campbell Harty, a student at Colorado Mountain College, died Aug. 6 while on vacation with friends and family in the British Virgin Islands. He was 19. Luke Noble, 14, of New Castle, England, also died. Harty, known as Campbell to friends, was born April 23, 1985 in Atlanta, the son of Michael E. and Eleanor P. Harty of Snellville, Ga. His siblings are Eleanor, 21, and Daven, 17.

Friends and family members said Harty, a 2003 graduate of Brookwood High School, loved the outdoors and found freedom behind the wheel of his beloved 4X4 jeep. He recently lived in Colorado where he attended Colorado Mountain College. Friends and family members said moving to the mountains enabled Harty to enjoy his favorite outdoor activities: mountain climbing, snowboarding, bike riding, skating and swimming. Though he lived in Colorado, Harty’s heart remained in Georgia, family members said, where his “close-knit ties were cherished by all who knew him.”

“Campbell never met a stranger,” family members said. “His warm smile and friendly personality was infectious to everyone. All who knew him were enriched.” Family members said his spirit for life was best demonstrated by a card his parents gave him on Valentine’s Day, which read, “You work hard and play fair – you’re a son to be proud of.” Along with his immediate family, Harty was survived by many friends and relatives.

The family received friends Wednesday at the Wages Snellville Chapel and a funeral will be held at 11 a.m., today at the Cannon United Methodist Church in Snellville, Ga. Rev. Glenn Ethridge will preside. A local family contact is Shannon Peek, who can be reached at 390-5149.
