Edith Esther Mathias, a frequent Vail visitor, died April 28 after a long period of declining health. She was 92.

Edith was born Feb. 3, 1912, to Joseph and Mary (Mapp) Rick in Mannsville, Okla., where she raised cotton and helped run a retail business. She met her future husband, John Robert Mathias, in southern Oklahoma, where he was wintering with the family sheep herd. They were married in Lawton, Okla., on March 10, 1935, and moved shortly afterward to the family farm near Monte Vista, Colo.

She lived most of her life in rural Colorado, where she and John raised four children: Robb of Mt. Dora, Fla.; Paul, of Centennial, Colo.; Beth Mathias Kraiss of Colorado Springs; and Montgomery (Mike) of Vail.

Edith is survived by her children; one sister, Jackie Norcross of Mt. Home, Ark.; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband.

She was interred May 5 in the Monte Vista cemetery.
