Former Vail resident Frances Spanel has died

Former Vail resident Frances S. Spanel died Tuesday at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lonetree. She was 82.

She was born in St. Cloud, Minn., on Sept. 29, 1923, and married Charles F. Spanel on April 19, 1952.

They lived in the Midwest for 25 years, and Fran was a homemaker.

In 1977, the Spanels moved to Vail, where Charlie established Inter-Mountain Engineering. Fran also worked for the company, first in Avon and continuing in the Denver area when they moved there in the 1980s.

She is survived by her husband, Charles, of Lonetree; her three sons and their wives, Jeff and Claudia of Edwards, Brian and Kathy of Chesterfield, Mo., and Toby and Carole of Parker; and six grandchildren, Morgan, Nick, Liz, Greg, Gretchen and Jackie Spanel. Also surviving are her sister, Kaye Fristoe, and her brother, Gene Thelen.

A memorial service was held April 14 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Englewood.
