Janet B. Smithson, 79, beloved wife of the late Paul B. Smithson, loving mother of Susan (Bill) Cherf, Shirley, Paula (Paul/Brudd) Rohr and Mary (Mark) Hutto, and grandmother of five, died recently after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.A long-time resident of Glenview, Ill., spent a good deal of time in Vail, where she could enjoy her varied outdoor activities.Born June 5, 1924, in Evanston, Ill., to Ralph and Clara Baker, she graduated from Evanston High School and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Prior to being a homemaker, she utilized her education in advertising on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.Janet Smithson was a past president of the Glenview Garden Club. She earned numerous diplomas for her Japanese flower arranging studies. In the 1960s, she was a member of the Northside Symphony playing the violin. She enjoyed showing five gated and fine harness American Saddle bred horses, and participated in polo, a sport taught to her by her husband. Smithson thoroughly enjoyed and participated in other outdoor activities including golf, biking, skiing, swimming and scuba-diving.Smithson’s travels included participation in an African Safari and scuba diving the sunken ship Atocia off the Florida coast.Her love for reading, writing and learning had her pursuing a masters degree at Lake Forest College. She completed all her courses, but due to the advancement of her Alzheimer’s she was unable to finish her final research paper.The immediate family will hold a service later this year in Colorado, where she will be laid to her final rest.In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Ass., Greater Illinois Chapter, 4709 Golf Rd., Suite 1015, Skokie, Ill., 60076-1260, or to Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of the North Shore, 2821 Central St., Evanston, IL 60201.
