Joseph Brian Pelchat of Avon died unexpectedly on Aug. 18. He was 49.

Pelchat was born on Aug. 18, 1957, in Rutland, Vt., the son of Robert and Rose Pelchat. He attended Rutland Town School and Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland.

He moved to Halfmoon, N.Y., and graduated from Shenendehowa, N.Y., in 1975.

In 1976 he move to Vail, where was part-owner of Vail Liquor Store.

He married Lisa Riley in 1990 and worked at Village Market in Edwards. In 2000, he went to work for Grand Junction Pipe in Eagle. He also volunteered for several years at the NASTAR race course on Beaver Creek Mountain.

He was an avid hiker and skier, and enjoyed fishing, rafting and rafting throughout the mountains. He was a big fan of the New York Yankees.

Pelchat was preceded in death by his father, Robert Pelchat, and a sister, Ellen Becky.

He is survived by his daughter, Alysha Rose of Edwards; his mother, Rose (Lafond) Pelchat of Largo, Fla.; and sisters Wanda Oczechowski of Rutland, Vt., Michelle Ryan of Chepachet, R.I., and Lisa Perry of Halfmoon, N.Y.

A memorial service is at 11 a.m., Saturday at Nottingham Park in Avon. In case of rain, the service will be held in the in Avon Town Hall council chambers. A potluck reception will follow the service.
