Jose B.O. Martinez passed away Saturday at his home in Red Cliff. Mr. Martinez was 74 years old. He was born on July 2, 1936 in Truchas, N.M. His parents were the late Besalirez Martinez and Tonita (Sandoval) Martinez Medina.

Jose had 10 siblings and started working at a very early age. When still a young boy, he worked at the Red and White Grocery Store hauling groceries in his wagon. From there, Jose went to the Shrine Lodge feeding coal into the boilers and then he worked for the railroad in Gypsum laying rails.

Jose Martinez enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 17. His mother had to give her permission for his enlistment because he was under age. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Jose returned to Red Cliff and went to work for New Jersey Zinc at the Gilman Mine, where he stayed for 24 years. After his retirement from mining, Martinez worked for Academy Insulation and then spent the next 12 years working at City Market in Avon.

It was in Red Cliff that Jose met his future wife, the former Jane F. Medina. They were married on June 14, 1955 in Taos, N.M.

Mr. Martinez enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking, and he always loved going to picnics and barbecues. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Red Cliff and St. Patrick’s Parish in Minturn. Jose also belonged to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Mr. Martinez is preceded in death by his parents, step-father Leo Medina, sister Alice Smithheisler and grandsons Eddie Rodriguez and Darren Salazar. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane Martinez, in Red Cliff; children Lorraine Parodi, Celine Martinez and June (John) Ernest, all in Red Cliff, Joseph (Angie) Martinez, in Leadville, and Lisa Martinez, in Red Cliff; five grandsons, Paul Rodriguez, Joseph Martinez Jr., Andrew Salazar, Levi and Kyle Ernest; one granddaughter, Crystal Shine; seven great-grandchildren, Angeline and Anthony Rodriguez, Malaki, Anthony, Jetzibe and Jeremiah Salazar and Chantel Rodriguez; six siblings, Flora (Lupe) Martinez, Cora (Don) Walker, Cecelia (Harold) Martinez, David (Grace) Martinez, Irene (Anastacio) Trujillo and Gene (Jennifer) Martinez; brothers and sisters-in-law Virgil Lopez, Helen Medina, Frances (Jimmy) Fernandez, Jimmy (Ruby) Medina, Victoria Medina and Mae Shine. Mr. Medina is also survived by his maternal uncle, Flavio Sandoval, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, both at St. Patrick’s Parish in Minturn. The Rev. Father Roger Lascelle will officiate and Pat Hamilton will sing. Jose will be laid to rest at River View Cemetery in Minturn. Pallbearers will be Paul Rodriguez, Joseph Martinez, Andrew Salazar and Kyle, Levi and John Ernest. Honorary pallbearers will be Angelina Rodriguez, Antonio Mondragon and Eloy Sandoval.

Arrangements are being handled by Bailey Funeral Home in Leadville.
