Karen Rachel Smith, 46, dies after illness

Karen Rachel Smith, 46, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and formerly of Vail, died Oct. 3 at St. Anthony’s Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Karen Rachel, who went by “Rachel,” worked at the Holiday Inn Chateau Vail from 1986 to 1989. She was an avid runner having competed in events such as Bay-to-Bay, Turkey Trot and Gasparilla.

Born in Montgomery, Ala., she moved to St. Petersburg in 1973 from Hawaii. She was a graduate of Northeast High School and the University of South Florida. She worked as an accountant assistant and a waitress and was a Catholic.

Survivors include her parents, Stanley and Helena Smith of St. Petersburg; sisters, Melena Darr of St. Petersburg and Valerie Smith of Glenwood Springs and formerly of Vail; a brother, Gary, of St. Petersburg; and three nephews.
