Kathy Miller, a longtime local who had been battling cancer since December 2003, died July 7. Miller, who arrived in the valley in the 1970s, worked at the Saloon in Minturn until March, when cancer treatment forced her to stop working. A benefit concert to raise funds for her treatment was held late last month at the Saloon, where Miller had been a waitress and trainer since 1998.

“Kathy has many, many friends in Minturn and around the valley who have known her a long time,” Saloon owner Andy Kaufman said in an interview before the fund-raiser. “Everyone who’s heard about this and who knows Kathy wanted to do something to help.” Miller’s friends are trying to raise $30,000 for her medical costs. A group of her friends and co-workers have a booth at the Minturn Market where they are raising funds with a silent auction. Anyone with donations for the silent auction can contact Bec Jones at 331-6884.

The Vail Valley Charitable Fund also gave Miller a grant to help pay for treatment. Donations also can be sent to the Vail Valley Charitable Fund – P.O. Box 3851, Eagle, CO 81631 – with Kathy Miller’s name specified. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
