Lucia Heller, a longtime Eagle resident and trusted friend to many in the community, died Thursday. She was 59.

Lucia was born May 28, 1950, to Lucile and Irving Heller in West Burlington, Iowa. She had three sisters and one brother.

In the early 1970s, Lucia moved to Colorado and resided in Red Cliff and Minturn. She was employed at the Vail Clinic, before Vail Valley Medical Center was established. She enjoyed hiking and backpacking and communing with nature.

Her daughter, Rachel Mudd, was born July 17, 1977. They moved to Eagle in 1980 where Lucia remained for the rest of her life.

For several years, Lucia worked at the First Bank of Eagle County. Later, she was employed at Johnson and Kunkel and Associates before retiring a few years ago.

Lucia filled her table with food and friends and her garden with flowers. She loved to cook and entertain and her friends will never forget her contagious laugh and her generous heart.

“You could never come to her house in the summer without being offered a glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade,” said friend Loni Beyer. Her friends fondly remember her homemade cakes and cream puffs and her famous fried chicken dinners.

She was a talented artist and she loved animals.

“A whole community of cats and dogs enjoyed the variety of treats and the attention Lucia lavished on them,” offered long-time friend Hope Hewetson.

Lucia always found time to spread out lots of birdseed and not even a visit from a bear could prevent her from her routine. Sometimes she would purchase hay bales so deer would have a place to bed down in her yard during the winter months.

Lucia was a spiritual person and for the last 10 years she was a follower of the Diamond Approach to Inner Work at the Ridhwan School in Boulder.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Max. She is survived by her daughter, Rachel Mudd, of Boulder; sisters Marcia Dutmers, of Loveland, Colo., and Susan Rose, of Van Nuys, Calif., and Jane Romero, of Van Nuys; niece Jennifer (Chris) Williams, of Eagle; many other nieces and nephews; her beloved cats, Maxwell and Lola; and host of friends.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m., Monday at the Eagle Methodist Church located at 138 Howard Street. Memorial contributions can be made in Lucia’s name to the Eagle Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 4105, Eagle, CO 81631.
