Mary Noriega

Mary Noriega went home to be with the Lord ever so peacefully on Saturday at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko, Nev.

Mary, a longtime resident of Leadville, was born Sept. 4, 1921, in Conejos County.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Noriega; her grandson, Eric Noriega; her grandson, Bobby Merrill; her step-grandson, Raymond Medina; and her great-great-granddaughter, Naelynn Viola Pereida.

Mary met Manuel in Del Norte, where they were later married in 1941. They were blessed with two children, John and Beatrice.

Mary and Manuel, along with their children, moved to Leadville in December 1949. Manuel worked at the American Smelter and Refining Co. in Leadville for 13 years. After the smelter shut down, Manuel worked other jobs wherever they were available, one of them being the ski resort in Breckenridge.

After a short illness, Manuel Norieta went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 31, 1966.

Mary worked at the Timberline Motel in Leadville all the way up to her 80th birthday, when she reluctantly retired.

Mary Noriega is survived by her son, John Noriega (wife Margaret), of Gypsum and her daughter, Beatrice Merrill (husband Don) from Elko, Nev.; grandsons Dwayne (Suzanne) from Leadville, John Michael (Larissa) from Modesto, Calif., and Lance, from Denver; granddaughters Debbie Hoppi (Lonnie) from Avon, Monica Noriega (Rory) from Phoenix, and Brenda Noriega, from Salida; and 14 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Mary also shared love with her step-grandchildren, who also loved her very much: three step-grandchildren and spouses, 14 step-great-grandchildren and six step-great-great-grandchildren.

Mary is also survived by one sister, Pauline from Colorado Springs, and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Noriega will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends who loved her and will always remember her great sense of humor. We love you, Mary. May you rest in peace.

Memorial services for Mary Noriega will be 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the Bailey Funeral Home, 510 Harrison Ave., Leadville.
