Nick Varsames, longtime Vail Valley resident

Nick Varsames, 86, of Naples, Fla., and Thornwood, N.Y., died on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at the Carlisle Residences.

Sgt. Varsames was a proud and decorated World War II combat infantryman veteran who served in the U.S. Army in the European theater. He made the sea assault landing into Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart with two clusters, the Bronze Star with one cluster, and the Silver Star Medal for Heroism.

He served as the commander of the Mount Holy Cross Minturn VFW Post 10721 from 1996 to 2000. He started several Vail Valley High School Scholarship programs for seniors and talked at many Veterans Day School Assemblies over the years.

Varsames was a longtime resident of the Vail Valley. He skied and snowboarded through his 80s.

Nick’s beloved wife, Lillian, predeceased him in 1991. He is survived by his son, John Varsames, of Naples, Fla., and his daughters, Marion Kelly and Susan Varsames, both of New York. Nick was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who are left with many great stories and a rich legacy.

The family will be receiving visitors from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. today at Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville, N.Y. The funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. at the chapel at Ferncliff Cemetery, where entombment will follow.
