Lawrence Benway Jr. was born during the Great Depression, February 20th, 1936, and passed away; on October 22nd, surrounded by his family. The son of Lawrence and Lillian Benway Sr, he was the eldest of four siblings: Claire, Jack and “Uncle” Charlie. Larry’s early life was shaped by the “Priests and Penguins” of Catholic parochial school, Eagle Scouts and Ice Skating in the backyard. His life took a defining turn when a neighboring family introduced him to the sport and lifestyle of skiing. This experience ignited a passion that eventually led him West, seeking a life filled with adventure.
A new ski resort named Vail advertised that they were hiring so, Larry accepted a job as an assistant ski patrol director for the ’63 / ’64 Season. Work was often scarce in the summers; so, Jackson Hole, WY was his next adventure. While working at the famous Cowboy Bar; a group of nurses strolled in after a shift and again his life was forever changed. That was the summer of ’65 and after a short courtship Larry and Willie were married in the summer of 1966.
Larry was more than just a husband, father and friend; he was a dedicated volunteer and mentor who prioritized the greater good of all the children and families of the Valley and beyond. His warmth, kindness, humor and unwavering support have left an indelible mark on those who knew him.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Willie and their two sons “Little” Larry and Patrick, “PH”; his granddaughters: Chapin and Lillian will miss him too. He is preceded in death by his second son Timothy, “TR” and his bother Jack. Larry will be forever loved, missed and remembered for his generous spirit and the countless lives he touched.
