Longtime Eagle County resident Phyllis Sterkel died July 13 after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. She was 67.Phyllis (Gramm) Sterkel was born Jan. 23, 1940, in Ipswitch, S.D. In 1959, she married Conrad (“Cuny”) Sterkel. They recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.Because of Cuny’s work with Amoco, the family moved many times until 1973, when they purchased the Alpine Standard service station in Vail and settled in the valley. In 1990, the couple retired to a ranch along Sheephorn Creek near Radium.Besides assisting with the family business, Phyllis managed the Hertz rental agency in Vail for a time. She loved to bake, make crafts and travel in their RV. Phyllis was very active in church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and organist. She and Cuny opened their home in Lake Creek for worship services, which became the springboard for Mountain Valley Lutheran Church in Eagle.Survivors include her husband, Cuny; two sons, Doug (Tia) of Gypsum and Jeff (Jill) of Eagle; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Erin and Alec Sterkel. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.Visitation will be held at the Everett Family Funeral Home in Gypsum on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Mountain Valley Lutheran Church in Eagle on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with visitation one hour before the service at the church.The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Mountain Hospice of Vail.
