Ronald 'Billy' Torrez

Ronald “Billy” Welker Torrez, a longtime Minturn resident, died unexpectedly at home Saturday. He was 47.

Torrez was born on July 6, 1960, in Espanola, N.M., to Ronald William Welker and Lillian Torrez.

Torrez was a great artist and a beloved father to his son, Joey, friends and family members said. He also was a beloved stepfather to the Medina siblings ” Sabrina, Patricio, Horacio and Steve, friends and family members said.

Torrez was known to young children as “Billy Bear,” friends and family members said.

Torrez enjoyed the outdoors, visiting New Mexico and vodka, friends and family members said.

Torrez was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents, Tracey Welker and Myrtle Brown, and Reynel Velasquez.

He is survived by his son, Joey Torrez of Santa Fe, N.M.; mother Lillian Torrez of Denver; companion of 12 years Carmen Esparsen; his son’s mother, Melissa Gurule of Santa Fe; sisters Pam Welker of Arizona, Angela (Ben) Medina of Minturn, Sylvia (Jose) Blanco of El Paso, Texas; brothers Randy Torrez of Petaca, N.M.; “brothers” Pat Romero of Denver and Armando Romero of Minturn; grandmother Senaida Herrera of Denver; and numerous nieces and nephews.
