Roy Allen Johnston, a longtime Vail Valley resident, died May 10.

Roy was born July 24, 1948. Skiing became a passion and Chicago’s mountains were not enough. Roy moved to Vail in the ’70s.

He was then hired by the Vail Ski School and worked full- and part-time until he left town seven years ago.

His company, Johnston Painting, grew through the years. He was known to paint anything – a closet or the gondola cars and towers. His company employed hundreds during his 30 years in business. One employee was his friend for as long as 28 years.

He loved skiing. On a powder day, he’d be at the lift when it opened.

Roy’s daughter, Katie, was his pride and joy. Katie was born July 3, 1985, and at the Vail parade on the Fourth of July he was seen passing out cigars.

Unlike her mom and dad, Katie had a passion for riding and showing horses. Roy did all he could to make that dream come true. He would brag to anyone in town of her successes.

He is survived by his daughter, Katie; Katie’s husband, Luke; his ex-wife, Diane; Diane’s mother, Josephine; Diane’s sister, Joanne; Diane’s brother, Bob; and his mother, Louise Johnston in Florida.

Katie, Luke and Diane would like to invite you on Thursday to Sarah’s Lounge at the Christiania between 4 and 6 p.m. to celebrate Roy’s life.
