Sarah Velasquez, 1924-2005
Sarah Amelia Velasquez died Sunday at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo. She was 81.
She was born in El Valle, N.M. on June 29, 1924. Her parents were the late Filemino and Amelia Romero Cruz. She grew up in New Mexico and on July 26, 1942 married Jose “Canuto” Velasquez in Penasco, N.M.
In 1955 Jose and Sarah moved to Red Cliff where Jose went to work for the New Jersey Zinc Co. at the Gilman Mine.
Sarah and Jose had 14 children, and raising the family was Sarah’s full-time job. Family members say Sarah was never happier than when she was with her family. She sewed for her family and as her children got older, baby-sat for her many grandchildren, they say.
She enjoyed cooking for all of them and especially loved the Friday night family get-togethers where making pastelitos was her specialty, family members say.
She also enjoyed listening to country music, and watching soap operas and polka dancing on TV. She also was a whiz with crossword puzzles, family members say.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters; four great grandchildren ” Lauralee Gurule, Isiah and Daniel Macias, and Hope Velasquez; and a son-in-law, Lynn Oliver.
She is survived by her husband, Jose Velasquez of Red Cliff, and 14 children ” Robert (Gerie) Velasquez and Donald Velasquez, both of Leadville; Susan (Doug) Bowen of Grand Junction; Emily (Herson) Medina and Ida (Roger) Avila of Leadville; Nancy Catherine (Daniel) Sullivan in Rochester, Ind.; Walter (Lorraine) Velasquez of Grand Junction; Jerry (Angel Mondragon) Velasquez of Gypsum; Vern (Lizbeth) Velasquez of Leadville; P-Wee Velasquez of Red Cliff; Theresa (Adrian) Martinez and Jodene (Randy) Flores of Leadville; Jackie (Tom Barela) Velasquez of Gypsum; and Becky (Augie) Barraza of Leadville.
She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:30 a.m., Thursday ” both at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville.
Father Hugh M. Guentner, O.S.B. will officiate and burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Leadville.
Pallbearers are Michael, Christopher and Eddie Velasquez, Raymond Oliver, Andrew Medina, Roger Avila, Jr., Marcos Luna and Ben Flores. The honorary pallbearer is Daniel Velasquez. Ushers are Juan and Gabriel Velasquez, Tommy Barela and Nick Gonzales. Presentation of gifts will be made by Nadine Castillo and Dawn Fernandez.
Following interment services a reception will be held at the Leadville Elk’s Lodge.
