Vail Daily obituary: Daniel P. Higgins, 1962-2015

Daniel Paul Higgins, 52, died Sept. 24 at his home in Gypsum surrounded by family.

Dan was born Nov. 3, 1962, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to the late Wayne and Hazel Higgins. He moved to Gypsum in 1977 with his family. He graduated from Eagle Valley High School in 1981. He was a member of the football and track team. He held multiple school track records for over 20 years. Dan was also a bronc rider. He participated in Little Britches Rodeo and was later a volunteer for both Little Britches Rodeo as well as the Eagle County Fair and Rodeo.

Dan and Rhonda married in 1983. He was the director of fleet maintenance for the town of Avon, where he worked for over 21 years. Although he was responsible for all aspects of his department, Dan was a mechanic at heart and still liked to work on the vehicles when he had time.

Dan loved to be outside, preferably going fast. He loved to ride dirt bikes, motorcycles and snowmobiles and he loved to waterski. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his kids.

Most importantly, Dan was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had a wry sense of humor and everyone enjoyed his entertaining stories. He truly had a zest for life and always had a twinkle in his bright blue eyes.

Dan is survived by his wife Rhonda; son Kyle (Vanessa) Higgins; daughter Hattie (Dain) Wagy; granddaughter Brooke Higgins; grandsons Jack and Cash Wagy, another grandchild due early next year; sister Denise Higgins; sister Lora (Mark) Ullerick; brother Brad (Wendy) Higgins; and large extended family.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Avon Regional Transit Facility, 500 Swift Gulch Road in Avon.
