Vail Daily obituary: Mick Mikkelson, 1931-2011
Vail, CO Colorado
Delbert “Mick” Mikkelson died peacefully in Sun City West, Ariz., on June 13.
Mick was born on Aug. 4, 1931 in Omaha, Neb., to Floyd and Edna Mikkelson. He was raised in Lyons, Neb., with his brother Dale and spent his days working on the family farm. After graduating from high school, Mick moved to Longmont looking for new adventure.
From building homes to creating and opening new businesses, Mick was happiest when he was busy. In Longmont, Mick owned Ross Heating and Air Conditioning and he was an active member in the Longmont Emergency Unit from 1959 to 1969. In 1964, Mick served as chief for the group. The group provided emergency services that included swift water rescue, mountain search and rescue, and wildland fires in the Longmont area. Mick opened Professional Ambulance Service in 1967 in the Longmont area and sold the business some years later.
On June 14, 1967, Mick married Verona “Ron” Roby. They moved to Vail in 1968, where they built their home on Red Sandstone Road in 1972. Together, Mick and Ron raised their family and established Piney River Ranch, a guest ranch located north of Vail on Piney Lake. It offered horseback riding, boating, hunting, fishing and outdoor cookouts to visitors as well as snowmobiling and snowcat tours in the winter. In 1990, they retired and moved to Palisade and eventually to Sun City West, Ariz.
When he wasn’t working, Mick enjoyed boating and fishing on Lake Powell, riding his Honda Goldwing, snowmobiling and hunting in the Piney area.
He is survived by his wife, Ron; his brother Dale (Florise); daughters Jodelle Henderson, Jayme Shipley, Darcy Balmares and Sherry Bain; sons Jim (Madeleine) and Roby (Susan) Forsyth; grandchildren Mason and Madison Stauffer, Kaisa and Mia Forsyth and Clayton and Summer Forsyth.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a memorial gift in the name of Delbert Mikkelson to Legacy Hospice 4237 North Craftsman Court, Suite 201 and 202, Scottsdale, AZ 85251
