Warren Raymond French died Tuesday

Warren Raymond French Jr., retired chief of the Arlington (Mass.) Fire Department, of Arlington and Ipswich, Mass., died peacefully in his sleep on Christmas night. He was 84.

French joined the Navy on Jan. 19, 1943 and served on the U.S.S. Bradford during World War ll. He was honorably discharged on March 11,1946.

He married his wife, June (Collins) French on Aug. 25, 1946, and joined the Arlington Fire Department on Feb. 13, 1949. He retired as chief on Feb. 23, 1985.

He and his wife enjoyed retirement with their family at their home on the beach in Ipswich.

He was the beloved husband for 61 years of June (Collins) French, devoted father of 12 children: Shirley French Berry and husband Dan of Ipswich; David French and wife Sharon of Ipswich; Karen French Cleary and husband Jim of Salem, Mass.; Kevin French and wife Patricia of Colorado; Warren French of Colorado; Bryan French and wife Jean of Arlington; Jeffrey French and wife Nancy of Ipswich; Kathy French Stringer and husband Tom of New Jersey; Sheila French Aubin and husband Ron of New Hampshire; Denise French and husband Mike Townsend of Ipswich; and the late Paul F. French Sr. of Somerville, Mass., and Robert A. French of Townsend, Mass.; and father in law of Mary Jane French of Somerville and Nancy French of Townsend.

French also is survived by 36 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit in The DeVito-O’Donnell Funeral Home at 1145 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington on Friday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Camillus Church. Interment to follow Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Warren’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis ,TN 38105.
