VAIL — Cogswell Gallery presents a solo show with oil painter Darcie Peet, who the gallery has represented for over 10 years. For Peet, it was a love of horses and the West that drew her to Colorado as a child, and again in the early ’60s. For more than 25 years, Peet has called Copper Mountain and Tucson, Arizona, both home. No stranger to adventure and the outdoors, Peet is always willing to go the extra mile to capture the perfect feeling of nature’s serenity in her paintings.
“So much of the exhilaration in painting is in the initial quest,” said Peet. “The journey in finding those ‘wild places.’”
Whether a five-day pack trip into Canyon de Chelly, hiking to timberline to capture a painting of late spring snow, braving the desert sun of Saguaro National Monument, or tucked out of the wind behind scraggly, alpine evergreen, high on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, the extraordinary diversity of terrain, climate, seasons and light of the Rockies and desert provide never-ending sources of adventure and inspiration for the artist. Most recently, she’s been canoeing, kayaking, biking or hiking the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, Glacier National Park, California wine country and Sonoma Coast to gather stunning raw material for future paintings.
Exploring the Chicago Art Institute throughout childhood and traveling to Paris offered the Peet the opportunity to immerse herself in the art of the Impressionists. The teeming color, energy and light of the Impressionistic masterpieces remain vivid and enduring influences within her work along with the directness and spontaneity of the Plein Air movement.
Drawing and painting since grade school, Peet has had a multi-faceted business career in fine art and design. After more than 20 years in advertising and graphic arts, Peet returned to graduate school for an masters in interior design. The intense study of architecture, color, form, composition, scale, spatial relationships and speed drawing left an undeniable mark on her painting. Peet is a signature member of Oil Painters of America and has won many awards for her work and has been featured in many publications such as Western Art Collector and Southwest Art.
The public is invited Friday and Saturday from 1-5 p.m. for an artist reception with Darcie Peet.
