Astrid Carraro’s Best of Show image, titled “Along the Colorado River,”
Astrid Carraro | Special to the Daily |

GYPSUM — This July, the photographers of the Vail Valley Art Guild Photographers participated in a competition called 10 Days on the Colorado. All of their photos were taken along the Colorado River Road (Eagle County Road 301) from north of Interstate 70 at exit 134 and west of where the Colorado River Road joins Highway 131. The photos were taken from July 3 through July 12. Each photographer could enter only one photo.

The juror for the competition was renowned Colorado photographer John Fielder, who judged the prints and determined a Best of Show, first, second and third place image. The awards were presented at the VVAGP meeting on the evening of July 30. On Aug. 1, Fielder presented a slide show featuring his new book about the upper Colorado and Yampa Rivers at the Gypsum Library. He also discussed the VVAGP prints on display and the selection of the winners.

Two of the members that received top recognition were Astrid Carraro and Rachel Brockey. Carraro won Best of Show with her image titled “Along the Colorado River,” a photo of the canyon just upstream from the town of Burns. The members of the Vail Valley Art Guild Photographers also voted on their favorite image. That was awarded to Brockey for her image “The Playful Nudge — A Fifth Generation Colorado Cowboy and His Painted Pride,” an image of Kip Gates, a local rancher, and his beautiful painted horse Ella. The two interacted with one another while Brockey photographed them.
