Oops! Greeley Census alert too broad

Associated Press

GREELEY, Colo. – A U.S. Census office in northern Colorado wanted to alert residents to possible scammers posing as Census workers. But the warning is making things hairy for legitimate Census workers.

The warning issued Monday by the Weld County Census office said that Census workers would not be out until March.

But some Census employees work year-round gathering data on such things as unemployment and housing. They say the warning could make their jobs harder for the next few weeks.

Residents are asked to be helpful to doorstep Census workers but to call police if someone claiming to be a Census worker asks for a Social Security number or any personal financial information.
