Opera meets dance at Vail International Dance Festival

VAIL – The Vail International Dance Festival announced its 2006 lineup, highlighted by a unique pairing of opera and dance.The festival, scheduled for July 30 through Aug. 13, will open with legendary opera star Jessye Norman joining forces with choreographer Trey McIntyre for “The Diva, The Duke and The Dance.””Opening night will feature a truly one of a kind collaboration between two of the most renowned artists in their respective fields,” said Katherine Kersten, producing artistic director for the Vail International Dance Festival. “It is a bold project that intertwines live music and contemporary dance, unlike anything our audiences have ever experienced.”

The festival will continue on Aug. 1 with a free hip-hop performance in conjunction with the annual Hot Summer Nights free concert series. The festival’s focus will then shift north of the border on Aug. 2 featuring the Jeune Ballet du Quebec.Opening weekend will be highlighted by the popular International Evenings of Dance, Aug. 4 and 5, featuring principal couples from around the globe, performing classical and contemporary pas de deuxs.Week two will get under way on Aug. 8 with the first of two Different Dimensions performances. Billed as a “festival within a festival,” this show will showcase the contemporary talents of Denver’s Cleo Parker Robinson, along with ODC/San Francisco.

Heading south of the border for the second week, the festival will welcome Mexico’s Ballet de Monterrey. This young company features a unique infusion of classical ballet with Mexican musical heritage.The second installment of Different Dimensions, dubbed “To The Pointe,” will take to the stage on Aug. 11, while the closing weekend will be highlighted with “Ballroom’s Best,” an entire evening of ballroom dancing, on Aug. 12. There will also be a free family matinee on Aug. 13.Tickets for the 2006 Vail International Dance Festival went on sale Monday. Patrons purchasing reserved tickets for any performance before Dec. 31 will also receive a pair of complementary general admission lawn tickets to any 2006 festival performance.
