Oregon winery pours in Avon

Vail Daily staff report
Avon, CO Colorado

AVON, Colorado- Renowned Oregon pinot noir producer, Domaine Serene, will show off its wines Wednesday at Avon’s vin48 as part of the restaurant and wine bar’s weekly tasting series.

The 2006 Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir, 2006 Yamhill Cuvee Pinot Noir, 2006 Cote Sud Chardonnay and 2006 Clos du Soleil Chardonnay will be poured. Vin48’s chef/owner, Charles Hayes, will pair the wines with appetizers. Guests may also be treated to Domaine Serene’s single vineyard bottlings.

The event is part of vin48’s Summer Tasting Series which takes place every Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., vin48 serves wines from visiting winemakers, importers and industry insiders, and pairs it with Hays’ cuisine. All the wines served are available for purchase at discounted prices from Beaver Liquors in Avon.

This week’s tasting follows-up on vin48 owner/wine director Greg Eynon’s recent trip to Oregon.

“Last week I had the opportunity to visit Domaine Serene in the Dundee Hills of the Willamette Valley,” Eynon said. “After touring the vineyards and winery it was clear that the Evenstad’s and their wine-making team are completely committed to quality and sustainable viticulture.

“2006 was a warmer than usual vintage for Willamette Valley. For Domaine Serene, this translated into rich and opulent wines with a velvety texture.”

A passion for pinot noir led Ken and Grace Evenstad to Oregon in 1989. The intense purity of fruit that comes from this area was the driving factor for the establishment of Domaine Serene in the northern Willamette Valley.

Domaine Serene’s farming practices are designed to produce small quantities of crops for concentrated flavors. The 14-year average for the vineyards is 1.7 tons per acre.

All of Domaine Serene’s grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted on a conveyor belt to remove all imperfect fruit and other matter. The various small lots from each vineyard are kept separate in small open-top fermentors, and in small French barrels that come from several French forests.

Domaine Serene’s flagship wine is the Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir. Yamhill Cuvee Pinot Noir is also produced from estate fruit grown only in Yamhill County. The winery’s chardonnays are produced exclusively from Dijon clone fruit.
