Our View: Sell on Sundays
Vail CO, Colorado
It’s time for Colorado to repeal its silly law against selling beer, wine and booze on Sundays.
Our capitalistic society generally says we can buy legal substances whenever we want. Preventing us from purchasing alcoholic beverages on Sunday doesn’t make any sense: So you can get plastered at a bar from which you could drive home on a Sunday but you can’t buy some booze to get drunk in the safety of your own home.
The so-called “blue law” also smacks of social engineering: The government says it’s OK to buy (and make lots of money selling) booze six days a week but on the seventh day it’s back to the 1920s and prohibition. So sober up!
Let us buy it all the time, or make it illegal all the time.
The owners of small liquor stores seem to be the most adamantly against changing the law because it would open the industry up to supermarkets and big box stores like Wal-Mart. Some have said this will drive independent liquor stores out of businesses.
Well, in Florida and California you can buy liquor all over the place ” convenience stores, some gas stations, supermarkets and so on ” and guess what? There are plenty of mom-and-pop liquor stores in those states.
If it looks like the end of the line for the blue laws, small liquor stores would do better to start adapting to a new market in which they might thrive.
Liquor store owners also claim to fear the “Wal-Martiziation” of liquor sales ” customers will loose the intimacy of the corner liquor store. While, yes, the small liquor store can get speciality items for its regular customers and consult on the proper bottle of wine, in most cases we’re not talking about fine art or high-performance sports cars. Most people don’t need to consult when they’re buying a six-pack.
In fact, many of us would probably prefer paying the cheaper prices at which Wal-Mart could sell a case of Bud.
