Paddy’s, longtime Vail Valley bar, won’t close Friday

Paddy’s isn’t closing Friday, but owner Ralph Dockery isn’t making any promises past St. Patrick’s Day.

Because of a steep drop in his lunch business, Dockery cut Paddy’s hours this week ” from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. He’s also cut way back on the menu, and has laid off a lot of his employees.

That’s led to a rampant rumor that Paddy’s will close for good Friday.

“I’ll bet I’ve gotten 20 calls about it just today,” Dockery said Tuesday. “We’ll have our usual blowout on St. Paddy’s Day, but we should have a decision about after that made by Monday or so.”

Dockery has been trying to sell the bar for some time, and said that a potential buyer is one part of Paddy’s possible future. So are negotiations with the landlord and the banker.

“I don’t want to close,” Dockery said. “But I’m not going to go in the hole, either.”
