GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado ” Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, running mate of Republican presidential candidate John McCain will be in Grand Junction Monday, Oct. 20.

The McCain-Palin campaign sent out an e-mail Thursday night announcing the campaign stop.

The event will happen at Suplizio Field in Lincoln Park. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the event begins at 6.

When informed the visit was confirmed Thursday night, Mesa County Republicans Chair Gary Roahrig said the event was likely to be “the biggest event we’ll have on the Western Slope for some time to come.”

“We were told four months ago this would happen. We’ve had our fingers crossed hoping it would occur. And now it’s been confirmed,” Roahrig said.

Roahrig had spoken with the Secret Service about hosting an anticipated 18,000 to 20,000 people at the rally. People will get commemorative tickets once inside the field, but entrance will be first come, first serve. Entertainment, speeches from a list of Western Slope candidates and concession stands will be available at the event.

Mesa County Democrats Chair Mary Beth Pyle said Palin’s visit may have something to do with efforts by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama’s to get local voters energized to vote for their candidate.

Obama visited Grand Junction Sept. 15.

“I think because they’re behind in the polls they realize they need to get their candidates to Colorado, especially on the Western Slope,” Pyle said.
