Paula Cooper at Youth Olympics: Excitement builds for competition day
Special to the Daily
LILLEHAMMER, Norway — Local student Paula Cooper, 17, is representing the U.S. at the Youth Olympic Games in Norway, the only female from the U.S. to compete in the ski halfpipe competition today. She attends Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy and skis for Ski & Snowboard Club Vail. She is writing dispatches from Norway for the Vail Daily.
Last day of practice before the contest was today; skiers were in the afternoon and had perfect temperatures and no wind. I felt tomorrow’s excitement throughout the day, and tremendous support with the arrival of my sister Kate and my mom, who stood and watched at the bottom of the hill for the entire two hours. I was very happy with how well I skied, and while loading the bus felt satisfied with how the day went. At the hotel, I spoke with my D.J. (U.S. coach) about tomorrow; he expressed his confidence in me for tomorrow.
“When you get on the podium tomorrow, make sure you are only wearing your U.S. team gear,” he said.
With him believing in me, and tremendous support from my friends and family at home, I enter tomorrow with excitement and happiness.
