People you want to meet

Shuana Farnell

EDWARDS “-After putting down a book, whether you loved it or hated it, sometimes the only person you feel like speaking to is the author.

The Bookworm of Edwards is aware of this phenomenon and thus has arranged the Meet the Author Book Club series.

“I love doing author events, but I like doing it simple,” said Bookworm co-owner Kathy Westover. “We might do the Festival of Words again in the future, but we’re taking a year off because it was so much work. Last year we had Philippa Gregory come into town and we let all of our Book Clubs know about it.

The Tattered Cover in Denver had about 35 people come to see her. We had over 300. I have 85 Book Clubs registered at the store. The people who showed up were all Book Club people. They love to talk about books, and we thought it would help to have the author here.”

The Meet the Author series kicks off Monday at 5 p.m. at Eat! in Edwards with author Pam Houston, whose most recent novel, “Sight Hound,” is currently on the Bookworm’s best seller list. Houston’s work has appeared in several publications, including “The Best American Short Stories,” Elle, Vogue and The New York Times.

Her most well-known work is the short story/essay collection, “Cowboys are My Weakness.” On Monday, Houston, who lives in Creede, will also conduct a creative writing workshop with students at Battle Mountain High School.

The Bookworm is working in conjunction with Eat! Drink! for the series, which is slated to bring a different author to the establishment quarterly.

“Finding a venue is difficult,” Westover said. “When the idea of having it at Eat! Drink! came about, I thought, ‘That would be perfect.'”

Eat! Drink! will be closed from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday for the event, the cost of which is $15 and includes a glass of wine and appetizers. Reservations can be made at The Bookworm. For more information, call 926-7323. The event will be capped at the first 50 individuals to register.
