Prep notebook: Battle Mountain girls lacrosse opens season with win over 5A school

The Battle Mountain girls lacrosse team opened its 2025 season with an 11-10 win over Denver East on Saturday in Edwards.

Kate Kovacik led the Huskies with four goals, while twin sister Izzy Kovacik tallied four assists and two goals. Palmer Ulvestad, Murphy Werner, Addi O’Connor and Isabel Thomas also recorded scores for the Huskies as Hallie Holleman and Alexa McGuire took care of goaltending duties.

  • Eagle Valley boys lacrosse is 0-2 after falling to Aspen 17-1 Tuesday. Christian Petersen scored the lone goal for the Devils, who lost to Crested Butte 9-8 in the season opener on March 8. Eagle Valley will try to get its first win on Thursday at Vail Mountain School. “We have one of the best rosters we’ve had in many years,” Aspen coach Tommy Cox, who has led the program since 2019, told the Aspen Times after the win. “I am overly excited to see that we are living up — to some degree — to that roster, to what we should be doing. A lot of area for improvement today. Eagle Valley came and fought hard. We just got to make sure we iron out the details for the rest of the season.”
  • Vail Christian girls soccer lost to Buena Vista 7-0 on Tuesday to fall to 0-2 on the season. The Saints opened the year with a 4-3 loss to Front Range Christian last Saturday. They play their first home game on Friday against Rifle at 4 p.m.
  • The Eagle Valley girls soccer team scored three first-half goals and held off Glenwood Springs 4-3 in Tuesday’s league road matchup. The Devils (2-1) opened the year with a 6-1 loss to Grand Junction but came back to defeat Grand Junction Central 8-0 on March 6. Eagle Valley was 7-5-3 overall and 6-2-1 in league play last season.
  • Shaeffer Dodds went 1-for-3 at the plate and Zach Irwin and Jack Reed both scored runs, but Battle Mountain fell to Denver South 14-2 on the road Tuesday. The Huskies are at Grand Valley on Thursday and face Glenwood Springs in their home opener on March 18 at 3 p.m.
