Pickup strikes, kills woman in Eagle-Vail
EAGLE-VAIL ” A NAPA Auto Parts truck veered across the westbound lane of Highway 6 in Eagle-Vail Tuesday morning, striking and killing 24-year-old Maria Estrada, police said.
Estrada, an Avon resident, was walking along the gravel shoulder on the north side of the highway when the truck, driven by an unnamed female, struck the woman, according to Sgt. Shawn Olmstead of the Colorado State Patrol. The truck then hit a stop sign, boulder and tree before coming to a stop on the lawn in front of the Riverview apartment building, Olmstead said.
The reason the driver veered from the road is still under investigation, Olmstead said.
Estrada and the driver, who suffered minor to moderate injuries, were transported to the Vail Valley Medical Center. There, Estrada was pronounced dead from blunt force head injuries, said Kara Bettis, Eagle County Coroner.
The driver is not suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and any possible criminal charges are pending the outcome of an investigation, Olmstead said.
“We have to look at the overall circumstances before a decision can be made,” Olmstead said.
