Poised at Crossroads
Tuesday night the Vail Town Council could approve the rebuilding of Crossroads and with that perhaps new life for the shopping district around it.This latest battle royale between new and old guards might end with this round or it could well move to new ground. That is, to a vote of the people.Opponents – you pretty much know who they are; it’s the same bunch, more or less a few faces, as always – are deciding whether to start the petition drive if the council continues the recent 4-3 votes favoring the new Crossroads. They’ll need signatures from 10 percent of Vail’s voters, a challenge. What’s best for Vail? Getting on with the controversial 99-foot-tall building at its peak. Building the complex with plaza, ice rink, movie theater, bowling alley, restaurants, shops and condos. For all the fussing, the building simply wouldn’t be that big. And it would be a decided improvement over the tired current Crossroads, which should have been rebuilt a decade or two ago.But of course this is about more than Crossroads itself. The old guard digs in to hold onto the tried and true, however worn that has become. Newer leadership aims at progress.Expect a referendum. Sure, the community spoke in dislodging council members against Crossroads last November. But voters can be fickle. The conference center elections show that much. Change comes hard to Vail. That’s part of its charm.Vail, Colorado
