Police: Man struck, killed by car in Vail

VAIL – Vail Police are continuing to investigate a vehicle-pedestrian fatality that occurred early Sunday morning which has resulted in charges filed against the driver.

At 1:50 a.m., officers were dispatched to the scene of a motor-vehicle accident on South Frontage Road East near Elkhorn Drive. Upon arrival, officers found a 32-year-old male identified as Lewis Edward Cook III, from Glen Ellen, Calif., unresponsive along the side of the road. Officers performed CPR but were unsuccessful in reviving the man, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, it appears Cook was walking on the side of the roadway when he was struck by a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The driver of the vehicle, David Matthew Perzanowski, 29, of Vail, was on scene when officers arrived. He was taken into custody and charged with DUI and vehicular homicide. He was being held on a $15,000 bond and was transported to the Eagle County Detention Center. Toxicology tests will be performed on the victim, police said.

The accident remains under investigation, and additional information is being sought. If anyone may have witnessed the accident or saw the victim earlier in the evening, call the Vail police department at 970-479-2200 and ask to speak with an officer.
