DENVER, Colorado ” Internet entrepreneur Jared Polis recently put more than $500,000 into his campaign for the Democratic nomination for the 2nd Congressional District race, and his total self-donations have surpassed $1.5 million.

Polis is vying with former state Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald and conservationist Wil Shafroth for the nomination to replace Mark Udall. The primary is Aug. 12.

Fitz-Gerald’s campaign criticized the self-financing.

“Jared continues to demonstrate that he will literally put in whatever he has to try buy this race,” said campaign spokeswoman Mary Alice Mandarich.

“The difference between Jared Polis and career politicians like Sen. Fitz-Gerald is that she funds her campaigns with thousands of dollars from powerful special interests, like the oil and gas lobby,” Polis spokeswoman Dayna Hanson said. “Jared Polis is willing to spend the money he earned as a successful businessman to stand up to the special interests.”

Polis and Fitz-Gerald earned enough votes at a district assembly and convention to get on the August ballot. Fitz-Gerald received 60.1 percent of the vote. Polis got 39.9 percent.

Udall is running for the U.S. Senate.

Shafroth is trying to petition his way onto the primary ballot.
