Pond-skimmers splash down today in Vail
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL – Today’s World Pond Skimming Championships closes out this week’s Spring Back to Vail festival and this ski season.
The competition, in which costumed skiers and snowboarders speed down a slope and try to skim across a 100-foot pond, takes place from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak base area. The pond skimming champ wins two 2010/2011 Epic Passes from Vail Resorts.
“This year will be my fourth year competing,” said Vail resident Brad Ryan. “Anytime I can dress up in a ridiculous outfit, make people laugh and try to skim across a pond with thousands of people watching, you can guarantee I’m in. Winning a free pass EPIC pass wouldn’t hurt either.”
Judges will score each competitor on distance, style, creativity and water solubility.
“Making the ESPN top 10 plays of the week was probably the best moment in my pond skimming career so far – I never thought I would beat out Kobe on Sports Center,” said Ryan. “But, as a whole, the competition is fun because it’s an on-going tradition with good friends and another great part of the closing weekend festivities.”
The event will also include a free BBQ starting at 2:00 p.m. for all participants and guests courtesy of Vail Resorts. After pond skimming, Guster will perform a free outdoor concert at 4:30 p.m. at Checkpoint Charlie in Vail Village.
