Pot dispensary regulations up for vote in Colo. Senate

DENVER – A fight over whether communities can ban medical marijuana dispensaries is expected in the state Senate.

Lawmakers are set to debate proposed regulations for marijuana dispensaries Wednesday.

The bill passed by the House allows either local voters or governments to ban dispensaries. Democratic Sen. Morgan Carroll thinks that violates the statewide medical marijuana law voters passed a decade ago and plans to try and remove it.

That could put the entire bill in jeopardy because Gov. Bill Ritter says he won’t sign regulations that don’t allow for local bans.

Smaller dispensaries, meanwhile, are worried about having to pay thousands of dollars in fees upfront while regulators finalize the details of rules which could end up putting them out of business.
