Special to the Daily

There was a time when the end of potato harvest meant a community celebration. A fair of sorts would be set up at the Legion Hall in Gypsum. Farmers and ranchers would bring in produce ” potatoes, wheat, and barley to be judged. The women would enter their canned tomatoes and peaches; and homemade pies and cakes. The best earned ribbons.

Eagle’s downtown merchants want to bring back a touch of those old days with a “Potatopalooza” fest Saturday, Sept. 8 from 2 to 8 p.m.

There will be a definite potato theme Expect potato sack races, and a Mr. Potatohead decorating contest. The downtown ceramics store will offer a prize for the best potato-theme painted tile. Red Canyon Cafe will sponsor a baked potato bar; and rumor has it there will be two martini bars, with at least one stirring up potato-vodka drinks.

Stop by the beer garden at Alpine Ambiance. There will be plenty of live music. Three bands ” Methods, Bluzilla, and Jazzoompah, will perform on a stage at Fourth and Broadway.

“The downtown merchants are trying to create a fun, vibrant, lively downtown,” says organizer Erin Seabury.
