The death of a 30-year-old pregnant woman in a highway collision in Texas was a “crushing blow” to residents of Ouray, the tiny mountain community where she was raised, her former neighbors said.
Brianna Michelle Gomez, who was buried Wednesday, grew up in the southwestern Colorado town and recently opened a counseling office for autistic children in Amarillo, Texas.
“It’s a small community, and people are tightknit,” said Mary Stanko, 48, whose husband is the pastor of Ouray’s Calvary Assembly of God, which Gomez used to attend. “Blown away doesn’t begin to describe it. She was well-loved.”
Gomez was killed Sunday evening after a car driven by Colorado Sen. Suzanne Williams veered into oncoming traffic and struck her vehicle, according to Texas authorities. Gomez, who was seven months pregnant, her husband, Eric, and their two daughters were returning home from a Christmas gathering at his parents’ home.
Curran Blaec Gomez, a 3-pound baby boy, was delivered at Northwest Texas Healthcare Hospital in Amarillo, said Brianna Gomez’s grandmother Patricia Lahr of Ouray.
