Prep notebook: Battle Mountain freshman wins Colorado High School Ski League slalom

High school skiing, basketball and hockey scores and highlights

Ruthie DeMino helped Battle Mountain to a second-place finish in the Colorado High School Ski League slalom last Friday in Winter Park. DeMino also finished 10th in the Nordic ski race at Snow Mountain Ranch the following day.

Battle Mountain’s Eden DeMino won the girls slalom at the Colorado High School Ski League meet on Jan. 24 in Winter Park. The freshman overcame a 0.14-second first-run deficit on her sister, Ruthie DeMino to win with a two-run time of 1:33.03. The elder DeMino finished in third for the Huskies as Darienne Kenny took the silver, leading Aspen to the team title. The Huskies finished second, five points back.

Aspen took the boys title as well as Josh Stephen, Viggo Morgan and Matt McDermott finished first, second and fourth, respectively. Battle Mountain finished fourth, Eagle Valley was sixth and Vail Mountain School took seventh. Full results can be found at the Colorado High School Ski League website.

Nordic ski notes

Summit swept the team and individual titles at the Colorado High School Ski League’s 7.5-kilometer freestyle race at Snow Mountain Ranch on Saturday in Granby. Tiger senior Ella Hagen covered the course — the longest race run in the ski league’s history — in 24 minutes, 44.3 seconds to pull away from Vail Mountain School’s Isla Elton for the victory. Summit tied Lake County with 209 points as Battle Mountain (184) finished third and Vail Mountain (170) tied with Middle Park for fourth.



On the boys side, Carter Niemkiewicz, James Sowers and John Ryan went 1-2-3 for Summit, which accumulated 230 points. Poudre (182) placed second and Eagle Valley (171) took third, led by Tyler Blair’s seventh-place result. Teddy Brunner led all Eagle County athletes, placing fifth for Vail Mountain School.

Basketball notes

  • The Battle Mountain boys fell to Sand Creek 87-45 on Friday and lost to Skyline 64-25 on Saturday to drop to 3-7 on the year. Jackson Wansley scored 20 points in the loss to the Scorpions and Beau Suman led the way with 14 in the Huskies’ loss to the Falcons. Battle Mountain will look to get back in the win column against Grand Junction Central (2-14) at home on Tuesday.
  • The Battle Mountain girls improved to 9-4 with a 37-25 win over Skyline on Saturday in Edwards. The Huskies are ranked 27th in 5A in the most recent CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index.
  • Zakia Shreeve scored 11 points and Abby Talbot added seven more to go along with eight rebounds, but the Eagle Valley girls basketball team lost to Chatfield 61-37 on Saturday in Gypsum. The Devils fell behind 23-6 in the first quarter and couldn’t recover against the 5A school. Eagle Valley (6-9) travels to Summit (8-8) for its first league contest of the year on Tuesday night.
  • Vail Christian had three athletes post double figures in a 69-40 win over Soroco on Saturday in Edwards. Rayman Romanin, Asher Leonard and Oliver Neumann scored 18, 13 and 13 points, respectively as the Saints jumped out to a 31-21 first-half lead and never looked back. Vail Christian (5-4 overall, 2-1 league) travels to Hayden on Friday.
  • Vail Mountain School had its three-game winning streak snapped at home against Plateau Valley on Saturday. The Gore Rangers lost to the Cowboys 42-35 to fall to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the 2A Western Slope going into Tuesday’s road matchup against Middle Park (10-3).

Hockey notes

  • Glenwood Springs scored three third-period goals to pull away from Battle Mountain for a 6-1 win on Saturday. Lucas Charter and Jacob Roggie each scored two goals apiece for the Demons, who improved to 12-0-1 on the season. The Huskies (6-6 overall, 4-4 in league play) host Aspen (2-8) on Tuesday.
