The Colorado High School Activities Association 3A boys state golf tournament began Monday at Eagle Ranch Golf Course. After the first of two days of competition, Nicholas Brooks sat atop the 84-athlete leaderboard.

The Lutheran senior, who placed ninth overall at state last year, had four birdies on the front nine. Despite a hiccup on the par-4 13th hole, Brooks closed out the 18-hole round with a 66. Lutheran totaled 221 points and sits tied with Mullen for the top team spot.

Hudson Rozga and Lawson Rumley both shot 77 to lead the way for Eagle Valley, which sits 13 strokes back in eighth. Rozga burst out of the gate with a birdie on 10 and another two on 12 and 14. The sophomore struggled somewhat, however, on the front nine of his home course, coming home with a 40. It was the opposite story for Rumley, who bogeyed 10, 12, 14 and 15 and had a triple-bogey on the 438-yard 13th hole to start. After shooting 42 on the back nine of the course, Rumley heated up on the front, posting two birdies en route to a 1-under 35. Both players are in 20th place.

Fellow Devils Cooper Kirkman (80) and Chris Marsh (90) sit in 42nd and 75th, respectively. Battle Mountain’s William Morrison (78) concluded his round in 29th place.

Vail Christian and Vail Mountain School were at Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo on Monday for the 2A championship. The Saints (236) sit in fourth and the Rangers (246) are in 12th out of 16 teams after day 1. Frontier Academy (229) holds the lead, with Forge (232) and Telluride (233) close behind. Forge freshman Joey Banks was the only player to shoot under par. Banks grabbed poll position with a 1-under on the 6,669-yard course.

Vail Christian junior Wyatt Hansen made two birdies en route to a 77 and sits in 13th overall as the top local athlete. His teammates Cian Courtney (79) and Patrick Greer (80) rounded out the team’s first-day scoring while Trevor Meltz (80), Oliver Kullberger (83) and Fisher Phillips (83) led Vail Mountain School.

Eagle Valley mountain bikers win team crown in Nathrop

A slew of top-5 finishes propelled Eagle Valley to the Division 3 team title at the Chalk Creek Stampede on Sunday afternoon in Nathrop.

The fourth and final regular-season event on the Colorado High School Cycling League mountain bike calendar was held at the McMurry Ranch at the base of Mount Princeton. The 6.7-mile loop included 443 feet of climbing per lap, with a double-track ascent taking riders out of the ranch’s flat grazing area. Cyclists navigated singletrack across the plateau before taking a rocky and technical trail down to Chalk Creek. The loop continued with a winding section through aspen and cottonwood groves before returning to the venue on double track.

The Devils were led by Yampa Region points leader Eric Asselin, who finished third in the boys varsity race. Asselin, who won the first three regular-season races, found himself in a tight battle at the front wherein the entire podium crossed the line within seconds of one another. Boulder’s Gregory Debenedetti won in a time of 1 hour, 17 minutes and 54.22 seconds while Taavi Snapp (1:17:55.74) placed second and Asselin (1:17:59) captured bronze.

Teammates Heidi Treichel finished fourth in the girls varsity race and Eva Klesner was fifth in the girls junior varsity event. Eagle Valley’s scoring was capped off with Haley Treichel’s fourth-place result in the freshman girls division and Jack Sargent’s top-10 varsity boys showing. The Devils accrued 2,581 points while Estes Park took second with 2,217.

Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy finished third, just 10 points back in the Division 3 standings. Tyler Moore led the way with a runner-up finish in the freshman boys race. Moore completed the two-lap race in 58:25.7, finishing about two minutes behind Boulder’s Milo Barge, the region points leader. Trevan Baker (1:05:26.36) placed 15th for VSSA in the race. Teammates Parker Osborne and Katie Lombardi were 16th and 17th in their respective boys and girls varsity competitions while Elsie Robinson (1:18:06.69) placed 15th in the sophomore girls race.

The state championships are set for Oct. 18-19 at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs.
