Prep notebook: No. 2 Battle Mountain girls volleyball stays undefeated and softball season comes to a close

The No. 2-ranked Battle Mountain girls volleyball team improved to 11-0 after sweeping Aspen and Summit last week. The Huskies defeated the Skiers 25-20, 25-9, 25-20 on Tuesday before taking down the Tigers 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 on Thursday.

The Huskies sit atop the 7-team 4A Western Slope league standings with a 9-0 record, with No. 11 Glenwood Springs (11-2 overall, 5-1 league) and Eagle Valley (7-9 overall, 5-4 league) in pursuit. The Huskies are one of two undefeated teams in the state, with Montrose (14-0) being the other.

Other volleyball notes: Saints stay undefeated in league play

  • Vail Christian remains undefeated in league play after taking down De Beque 3-0 on Tuesday and Soroco 3-1 on Thursday night. The Saints (15-3 overall, 7-0 league) are now ranked 12th in the 2A Selection and Seeding Index. Mary McClarrinon and Michelle Teague led Vail Christian offensively against the Rams, posting 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Sam Bates tallied 22 digs and Tenley Brasington had 26 assists in the victory. Vail Christian is at home against Aspen on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
  • Eagle Valley lost a pair of tight five-set battles last week. The Devils hosted Glenwood Springs on Tuesday. Riley Weatherred tallied 28 kills and 14 digs in the 25-18, 20-25, 27-25, 25-18, 15-12 loss. Weatherred continued to carry the Devils on Thursday, accumulating 27 kills and three aces in the 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 16-14 loss to Delta. Cadence Aguilar added 18 kills and Ansley Hopper had 39 assists.
  • Vail Mountain School lost to Coal Ridge 25-113, 25-17, 25-19 on Tuesday to fall to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the 2A/1A Western Slope. The Rangers travel to Soroco on Wednesday.

Soccer notes: Battle Mountain takes down Vail Mountain School

  • Jakob Methvin recorded his seventh hat trick of the season and had four assists to lead Battle Mountain to an 8-1 win over Vail Mountain School last Tuesday. The Huskies improved to 9-2-2 on the year and 6-0 in league play while the Rangers dropped to 1-10 on the season. The No. 2-ranked Huskies close out their season against Pine Creek, the 10th-ranked team in 5A, on Oct. 17 before a showdown with 4A No. 1 Mullen on Oct. 25 in Edwards.
  • Eagle Valley improved to 8-4-1 with victories over Summit and Delta last week. Felipe Meneses scored two goals to lead the Devils to a 4-1 win over the Tigers on Oct. 6. The next day against Delta, Boris Gavrilov and Santiago Torres each found the back of the net with assists coming from Marco Rosales and Abel Ruiz in a 2-1 win. The No. 16-ranked Devils return to the pitch at Summit on Oct. 21.

Softball notes: Huskies in big over Aspen

  • Harper Jimenez Anders went 4-for-4 from the plate with two runs batted in to lead Battle Mountain to a 30-4 win over Aspen on Thursday. The Huskies scored seven runs in the first inning and 13 more in the fourth to blow the game wide open. Ellie Rella struck out five and allowed one earned run in the victory. The Huskies fell to Centaurus on Saturday to finish the year with an 8-11 record.
  • Eagle Valley defeated Meeker 17-4 and 16-7 in a doubleheader last Tuesday before falling to Montezuma-Cortez 10-8 in eight innings on Thursday. The Devils (8-13-1) sit in the 39th spot in the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index, which is used to finalize the round of 32 brackets. CHSAA releases those brackets on Oct. 13, with state tournament games beginning Oct. 17-18 at eight separate regional sites.
