Project Funway set for June 3
May 27, 2012
VAIL – The organizing committee of Project Funway is putting the final touches on the valley’s newest fundraiser: an evening of fashion that showcases local designers and their finest creations and raises money for the Education Foundation of Eagle County.
Project Funway is an event based on the smash TV hit, “Project Runway” – a show where inspiring designers are challenged to create their finest work. Here in the Vail Valley, the designers are all local amateurs and the challenge is to raise money, and the point is to have fun.
The event will take place June 3 at the Eagle-Vail Pavilion. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails and appetizers. Then the models hit the elevated runway, strutting for the crowd and a panel of local celebrity judges. There are three categories: “Pret a Porter” (or “Ready to Wear” in layman’s terms); “Haute Couture” (Paris Runway style); and to mix things up, an “Anything but Fabric” category. In the final category, designers can work with any medium but fabric. The organizers expect to see lots of plastic bags, cardboard, duct tape, stapling and hot glue – and hope that the loose rules will remove any intimidation factor for people who aren’t confident in their sewing skills. Credit in all categories will be given for creativity, design and craftsmanship. For those who do not wish to model their own work, models will be provided.
In addition to the show, there will be “pop for prizes” balloons with gift certificates from local businesses and an upscale consignment shop so all attendees can shop untill they drop. The evening concludes with an awards ceremony and the chance to boogie down with a DJ entertaining.
“Even with all the fantastic fundraisers in this county, we realized there was still room to do something different. So, Project Funway was conceived,” said Claire Thayer, one of the event organizers. “We really want people to have fun with it – whether you design and walk the runway yourself, design and have one of our models showcase your outfit, or if you just come to support the cause. Make it a night out with your girlfriends, or have a date night with your fashion-forward man.”
While Project Funway is meant to be lighthearted, the cause is taken seriously. The Education Foundation of Eagle County is a 501c3 organization that raises funds to mitigate the severe budget cuts that the Eagle County School District has experienced during the past three years. All monies raised will go directly to keeping quality teachers in front of students.
