DENVER, Colorado ” Backers of a plan to increase vehicle registration fees to pay for roads and bridges say they’ll phase in the hike because of the economic downturn.

Originally, state lawmakers proposed charging the owners of passenger cars and smaller sport utility vehicles a total of $41 a year in extra registration fees.

The bill they introduced bill Friday would start by charging those vehicle owners total of $32 in fees for the fiscal year that starts this July.

Starting in July 2010, the extra fees would rise to a total of $41. That’s the amount originally proposed by Gov. Bill Ritter and state lawmakers.

The fees are based on weight and would apply to all vehicles, from motorscooters to buses and trucks.
