Prosecutors tie Colorado suspect to 19 hepatitis cases
DENVER, Colorado – Prosecutors say 19 cases of hepatitis C have been linked to a Colorado surgery technician accused of stealing syringes of painkillers and replacing them with used syringes filled with saline.
Thursday’s allegation was the first time officials had directly linked the cases to 26-year-old Kristen Diane Parker.
Officials say up to 6,000 patients at two Colorado hospitals where Parker worked may have been exposed to the disease.
An indictment handed up Thursday charges Parker with 21 counts of tampering with a consumer product and 21 counts of obtaining a controlled substance by deceit and subterfuge.
A tampering conviction could carry a life sentence if any of the victims die.
Parker is being held without bail.
