AVON ” Public Access 5 now offers the award-winning news program “Democracy Now!” hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez.

“We’re excited to give our viewers an alternative in news programming,” said J.K. Perry, general manager of Public Access 5. “‘Democracy Now!’ offers a refreshing take on the issues that affect us.”

“Democracy Now!,” one of the fastest growing public broadcast programs, will show on channel 5 at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. every weekday. It provides audiences with access to people and perspectives rarely heard in corporate-sponsored media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders, peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts, according to the program’s Web site.

“I’m a big believer of citizen participation and diversity of opinion in the media, which are two goals we have at Public Access 5,” said board member Mark Gordon.

“Bringing ‘Democracy Now!’ to our viewers is a step toward achieving these goals.”

“Democracy Now!” has won numerous awards for journalistic excellence, including the George Polk Award and The Columbia-Dupont Award.

Public Access 5 is a nonprofit public, educational and governmental access station. Channel 5 is available to Comcast subscribers from Wolcott to Minturn and Dowd Junction to Vail.
