Puccini’s Bohemians tell ageless tale of true love
BEAVER CREEK – It’s an ageless story that’s been told time and time again from the Broadway hit “Rent” to Baz Luhrmann’s Academy Award-winning film “Moulin Rouge.” It was also the opera that moved Cher’s character to tears in “Moonstruck.” It’s the story of Mimi and Rodolfo, young Bohemians living in Paris’ Latin Quarter in 1860. Struggling to keep a roof over their heads, they find true, unrequited love. A full-scale production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème” will be staged by Teatro Lirico D’Europa at the Vilar Center for two nights at 7:30 p.m. today and at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
This is Teatro Lirico’s encore visit to the Vilar Center for the Arts under the artistic direction of Giorgio Lalov, a Bulgarian native who made his debut at La Scala Opera in Milan at the age of 25. The company presented a sold-out production of Verdi’s “La Traviata” at the Vilar Center in February 2004.Fluent in English, French and Italian, Lalov collaborated with former ballet divo Yves Jossé to form Teatro Lirico, which has completed over 3,000 worldwide performances, including eight major U.S. tours. The company travels with a symphony orchestra, a large chorus and dancers. The sets and costumes for the production are created in Sofia.
“We searched for years to bring full-scale productions of opera to our little theatre,” said the Vilar Center’s Kris Sabel. “When we were finally introduced to Teatro Lirico, we were thrilled that they do what many other touring companies won’t dare take on. Then, when we saw that ‘La Traviata’ was so well received by our audiences, we decided to pursue a relationship with Lalov and his company, booking the worlds’ most famous operas right here on our stage.”Tickets to “La Bohème” are available by calling the Vilar Center Box Office at 845-TIXS (8497) or by visiting http://www.vilarcenter.org. Each evening of opera will be complete with pre- and post-performance offerings. Rocks Modern Grill will have a $45 four-course prix fixe menu beginning at 5:30 p.m. today. Call the restuarant at 845-1730 for dinner reservations. And after the performance on Friday, the Vilar Center Guild will offer a $10 dessert and champagne reception following the show.
