Purley Bertroch, a lifetime Gypsum resident, died on Thursday. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday at the Gypsum Town Hall. His grandson Matthew Elliott will officiate.

Purley was born to Jesse and Maud Bertroch on April 24, 1917, in Greeley. His family homesteaded to Gypsum in the 1920s. After years of working the family farm Purley enlisted as a solider in World War II. Purley served in the First Calvary of the United States Army from April 4, 1941, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 15, 1945.

On March 1, 1946, he married his wife of 63 years, Betty Ella Reed. Purley and Betty have seven children: Mary (Jon) Ezequelle, Gary Bertroch, Kenneth Bertroch, Myrna (John) Murray, Eileen (Mike) Elliott, June Nestor and Sue Duncan.

Purley made his living as a carpenter throughout Eagle County and he retired as a general contractor and developer. In 1977 Purley and his two sons, Bertroch and Sons, developed much of what is considered old Gypsum.

Purley was proceeded in death by his parents, nine siblings, one son-n-law and two grandchildren. He is survived by all of his children, 14 grandchildren and 21 great grand children.
