Rabid horse Colorado’s first in 25 years

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado has its first case of rabies in a horse in 25 years.

Health officials in El Paso County said Tuesday they have euthanized a rabid horse.

Authorities say the horse likely got rabies from a skunk. They are warning residents to avoid wild mammals and to make sure their pets and livestock have been vaccinated. Dead skunks shouldn’t be handled without gloves.

Public Health Director Kandi Buckland says that rabies infections in horses are rare. The horse was euthanized Friday.
