Radio City contract talks bring in mediator

NEW YORK – Union representatives for Radio City musicians and its management accepted Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s offer of a mediator, hoping to resolve a labor dispute that has replaced a live orchestra with canned music.Although the city cannot get involved in private labor negotiations, the mayor told reporters, “it’s in the city’s interest to have companies succeed and people working and to have the great events that bring tourists to this city continue.”‘Bloomberg said both sides had declined the city’s help earlier but told him “that if by this past Friday they could not come to a resolution, then they would accept the city’s offer to provide a venue and a moderator.”Both sides, including mediator Frank Macchiarola, arrived at the mayor’s Gracie Mansion Monday morning to try to resolve the 13-day dispute. There was no word on how the talks were proceeding.Cablevision Systems Corp., the cable TV systems company, operates Radio City.
